Where did escape rooms come from?

There are multiple stories and multiple activities that led to the popularity of escape rooms. These include interactive theater, puzzle-based video games, choose your own adventure books, role playing games, and the boardgame Clue, all which gained popularity in the 80s and 90s. However, the earliest activity to resemble what we now know as an escape game was called True Dungeon, an activity during GenCon which debuted in 2003. The 2004 video game, Crimson Room, has been heralded as the first video game escape room.

Then in 2007, the first real-life escape room game was created. It was called “Origin” and was based on the work of author Agatha Christie. Starting in Japan, the trend began to spread quickly throughout the world eventually reaching the US in 2012. Race to Escape, a show in 2015, crowned the craze’s arrival on TV’s The Science Channel.

In 2014, Urban Escape Games was the first escape room built in Georgia. Today, we have two locations in Marietta and Alpharetta. We’ve found escape rooms are perfect for team building, birthday parties, or just a night out with friends. We have different games at each of our locations so escape room fans can experience a different challenge depending on which location they attend.
